Video: Anti-Advertising Campaign in New York City by Graffiti Research Lab
The folks at the ever ingenious and creative Graffiti Research Lab have made a clip of their recent anti-advertising campaign. The guerilla effort exploits video panels that display commercials outside subway entrances around New York City. The point is that the thousands of marketing messages we are exposed to on a daily basis is the true graf problem urban dwellers face.

The End of Street Art at 11 Spring St., SoHo, NYC
The New York Times has run a story about the final days of street art at the 11 Srping Street building in downtown New York City. During the past four weeks or so the new owners of the building, who will turn the building into a condos, have allowed artists to legally put up art work on the inside of the building, as well as the outside, in an effort to stage one last exhibition this weekend before construction crews start their work. Much of the art on the interior will be concealed behind drywall after this weekend. The building is open to the public Dec. 15 - 17, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. (Tip of the hat to Jess E. for the tip.)

The Story of the Mysterious Street Art-Covered Building at 11 Spring St., New York City
There's a place we've referenced many times here on Global Graphica, a place that is important in New York street art, so muhc so that is has become an internationally known icon and destination for artists. That place is the building at 11 Spring Street in downtown New York City. However, the building has been a mystery to most people, even long-time neighbors in the Nolita neighborhood where the stucture is stands. The building's exterior is a world-famous spot for street art and graffiti, which the owners in recent decades have left alone. The New York Times recently ran an article about the building. The building was recently bought from Lachlan Murdoch, the son of Rupert of Fox News fame. As a result a lot of information about 11 Spring St. has suddenly become available. Many pictures of street art and graf at 11 Spring St. are available for viewing on this site. Here's part of the list.

Art by UK-Based Street Artist Banksy Called "Rubbish"
Writing on Comment is Free, a Web site of the British newspaper The Guardian, Charlie Brooker has argued that the work of the hyped-up and hot street artist known as Banksy is "rubbish" that "looks dazzlingly clever to idiots." The article makes some keen points, some worth merit, and some worth debating, but it is not very convincing as it attempts to explain why Banksy is overrated and his work crap. The tone of the piece is hurtful and angry and it lacks the sophisticated reasoning of an instructive critique. It's rather funny, actually, and reads like an Internet troll.

"All-World" BNE
The New York Times ran an interesting story about the efforts by San Francisco city authorities to crack down on graf. According to the article in this past Saturday's edition of the Times, San Francisco is targeting sticker art
and hunting the guy responsible for the "BNE" stickers that have proliferated around the northern California city. BNE's stickers can be founds in many place, including right here in Global Graphica's stomping ground, New York City. (Thanks to Jess for the tip!)

Global Graphica's New Home
It's been quiet here on the Global Graphica site the past week or two as we, Air Massive, the publisher of Global Graphica, have been on hiatus, taking a short vacation before getting super busy with a big move to a new place in downtown NYC. We apologize to our regular visitors and subscribers for the lack of posts during this time.
We relocated the Air Massive HQ back into the heart of the Manhattan's Lower East Side, and into our favorite part of the nabe, which, depending on with whom you speak, is sometimes also referred to as "Northeast Chinatown," "LoLIta," "LoHo" or "Bel-Del" (for Below Delancey Street). It's a fascinating part of New York, one with lots of history, culture, bars, restaurants and music venues, as well as lots of diverse characters. It's a place where the surviving remnants of Manhattan's historic Jewish immigrant community of the Lower East Side rubs up against the newer bustle of Fujinanese Chinatown on one side and an old Puerto Rican barrio of "Losaida" on the other side.
A few doors down from Massive HQ, in a now empty and decrepit tenement building, is where Lou Reed used to live back in his Velvet Underground days. Down the street you can find the best caipirinhas outside of Brazil. Around the corner, you can find the best fried dumplings outside of China. And a few blocks away you can drink the best espresso in Manhattan and eat the finest almond croissants outside of France. We fucking love it.
Now that we're done unpacking and have settled in, we thought we'd share some images of the new nabe and home to Air Massive and Global Graphica below.

Banksy on Melbourne's Disappearing Stencil Art

There is an interesting article today in U.K. newspaper the Guardian about the changing urban landscape of Melbourne, Australia, as the city tidied itself in preparation of the Commonwealth Games. The clean-up is a result of an initiative to remove graffiti and street art. The report, titled "The writing on the wall," was penned by the well-known British street artist "Banksy." According to the story, Melbourne's effort to paint over its rich tapestry of urban art is enforced by the city's new official zero-tolerance stance on anything that constitutes graffiti. This includes stencil art for which Australia's second city has become famous internationally among followers and creators of street art. (Props to Robin for the tip.)

NYC Artist Flower Guys Makes New York Mag Cover

In a special double issue that hit stands last week, New York Magazine published a feature under the teaser "123 Reasons to Love New York Right Now." It's, as they say, a keeper. But what we really love about this issue is the magazine cover. There's a photo of a street artist painting a massive line-drawing of a flower.
The flower image is instantly recognizable to New Yorkers, especially downtowners, and anybody who follows street art. The artist is known generally as "Flower Guy." His real name is Michael De Feo, an artist whose work has been exhibited worldwide. De Feo is also the author of "Alphabet City," one of several books on street art recently published in the U.S.
De Feo's flowers have become icons within NYC. Flower Guy's work can be found as massive paintings that appear on sides of tenement buildings and lofts (like the one on the New York cover) and as small wheat-paste posters on post boxes and the bases of lamp posts.
According to British author and graphic designer Tristan Manco in "Street Logos," his ever reliable book on street art around the world, De Feo started creating stencils of moons, flowers and safety pins around downtown New York City in the early 1990's, but locked onto the flower image while experimenting with a paint brush.
In a cheeky touch, the New York mag editors list De Feo as reason "NO. 124." (the cover teaser, as noted above says "123"). Love it.
