The Banksy Dilemma for Bristol, U.K.
A work by he U.K.-based street-art superstar Banksy has recently put the city council of Bristol, England between the horns of of dilemma. The "graffiti" artwork was put up on the side of a public building, the city council itself. Recently, the council has tasked itself with enforcing a general policy of stopping and erasing graffiti across Bristol, but it recognizes that the work of Banksy is of an altogether different order -- Banksy himself has, during the past several years, risen to become in the eyes of the art world (and much of the public) a genuine artist ,who recieves well-paid commissions to put the same kind of art works in other places. Does the city council remove the work from the building or keep it, setting a precedent for graffiti vandals. This is the issue that the council is wrestling with. In the meantime, they made an exception and have allowed Banksy's art work to stay.

Video: Anti-Advertising Campaign in New York City by Graffiti Research Lab
The folks at the ever ingenious and creative Graffiti Research Lab have made a clip of their recent anti-advertising campaign. The guerilla effort exploits video panels that display commercials outside subway entrances around New York City. The point is that the thousands of marketing messages we are exposed to on a daily basis is the true graf problem urban dwellers face.

The End of Street Art at 11 Spring St., SoHo, NYC
The New York Times has run a story about the final days of street art at the 11 Srping Street building in downtown New York City. During the past four weeks or so the new owners of the building, who will turn the building into a condos, have allowed artists to legally put up art work on the inside of the building, as well as the outside, in an effort to stage one last exhibition this weekend before construction crews start their work. Much of the art on the interior will be concealed behind drywall after this weekend. The building is open to the public Dec. 15 - 17, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. (Tip of the hat to Jess E. for the tip.)

Bear Stencil on 2nd Ave., East Village, NYC

Lovin' this stencil we found on 2nd Avenue in the East Village in New York City. When we saw this piece, we thought it looked like the work of U.K.-based Banksy, but on closer inspection it looks more like the work of seminal stencil artist Blek Le Rat. But could it easily be the work of another artist and likely is; the piece is signed at the bottom, but the moniker is illegible. (If any Global Graphica readers can identify the work, please drop us a line.)

Video: Cheeky Signs Piece + Panorama of 11 Spring St., NYC
Here's a clip showing "Cheeky" and crew sign a fresh piece at the building at 11 Spring St. (a.k.a. the "candle building") in Nolita, New York City. The new piece was put up on Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2006) evening a couple of days after several of downtown New York's most active street artists put up a ton of new work on the building. The video shows the breadth of these artists fresh work on the Elizabeth St. side of the buidling.

No. 4: Street Art All-Stars Stage Massive Attack at 11 Spring Street, NYC

And in this image is another part of the strip of street art works (including pieces by Faile, Bast, and Cheeky) that stretch along the Elizabeth Street side of the building at 11 Spring Street in downtown Manhattan, New York City. The work by Faile is epic in scale, cut along the building arches.
BACKGROUND
At some time this past weekend, several of the best-known and most active street artists in downtown New York City put up fresh work, some of it in the form of massive wheat-paste-ups, on the building at 11 Spring Street in the Nolita neighbrhood of downtown Manhattan. Among the works are pieces by WK Interact, Faile, Bast and Cheeky. Within the past two weeks new work by Flower Guy, Swoon, Above and The London Police has also gone up on the structure.
The building has been empty and seemingly uninhabited for years despite changes of ownership in recent years. For many years, each window of the tenement-style structure had a light in the form of a fake candle, hence the informal name "candle building." Eleven Spring St. has been a bit of mystery until recently when the property was purchased for residential use. What appeared to be early renovation work began last week.
Some fear that the redevelopment of the building for actual habitation might spell the end of street art at the site. Over the years, 11 Spring has become a landmark of street art and a canvas and mecca for artists and lovers of street art. This massive attack of new work on the building almost seems like a way of saying "street art is here to stay no mattter what the future of the building."

The Story of the Mysterious Street Art-Covered Building at 11 Spring St., New York City
There's a place we've referenced many times here on Global Graphica, a place that is important in New York street art, so muhc so that is has become an internationally known icon and destination for artists. That place is the building at 11 Spring Street in downtown New York City. However, the building has been a mystery to most people, even long-time neighbors in the Nolita neighborhood where the stucture is stands. The building's exterior is a world-famous spot for street art and graffiti, which the owners in recent decades have left alone. The New York Times recently ran an article about the building. The building was recently bought from Lachlan Murdoch, the son of Rupert of Fox News fame. As a result a lot of information about 11 Spring St. has suddenly become available. Many pictures of street art and graf at 11 Spring St. are available for viewing on this site. Here's part of the list.

Art by UK-Based Street Artist Banksy Called "Rubbish"
Writing on Comment is Free, a Web site of the British newspaper The Guardian, Charlie Brooker has argued that the work of the hyped-up and hot street artist known as Banksy is "rubbish" that "looks dazzlingly clever to idiots." The article makes some keen points, some worth merit, and some worth debating, but it is not very convincing as it attempts to explain why Banksy is overrated and his work crap. The tone of the piece is hurtful and angry and it lacks the sophisticated reasoning of an instructive critique. It's rather funny, actually, and reads like an Internet troll.

Detail: Billboard Backside Graf, SoHo

This close-up shot allows a better view of the tag detail, but it's still a bit difficult to interpret the lettering. (We don't recognize the tag.) Still, to see a writer get his moniker up high into the city skyline like this is amusing and must make for an interesting visual landmark on the SoHo cityscape for those who live and work within view from the high-rent lofts apartments and advertising agencies nearby.

Billboard Backside Graf on 6th Avenue, SoHo

Putting your moniker up on the back of one of these stand-alone billboards takes real guts. Not only is it physically dangerous, but the chance of getting caught or stuck presents quite a risk to even the most adventurous writers. We found this billboard graf on 6th Avenue, a few blocks north of Canal Street in SoHo, in New York City.

Video: Lots of Tags Along Train Route in Holland
This short video clip shows tons of graf that can be seen while riding a train somewhere in the Netherlands. In the 1970's kids on the South Bronx were doing this on the New York and subway system. Thirty years later, the street culture of graf-writing kids in NYC can be found in Western European cities. The globalization of hip-hop, youth culture and style.

BORF Tag on Mulberry Street, NoHo

"Borf" stikes again. This recent tag near the end of Mulberry Street in NoHo, downtown New York City, seems kind of ... well, lazy, too easy and artless. We've seen Borf's stencils elswhere around the city and they rock -- Borf is capable of much better than this crass tag. Which makes us wonder if maybe an imposter has been using Borf's tag and running down his cred.

Defaced "Silent Hill" Ad

The new print ad for the horror-suspense film "Silent Hill" features the face of a mouth-less girl. To underscore the "silence," her lips have been Photoshopped away by designer of the ad. It's a technique that grabs the eyes of viewers, even those jaded New Yorkers who pass the ads on the subway platform. But the ads are also ripe canvasses for graf writers or pranksters (or both, naturally) with a little imagination, a little initiative and a Sharpie. In the past couple of weeks, we've seen at least half a dozen of these defaced ads around the New York City subway system. In this ad on the Uptown platform at Spring Street Station in SoHo, a graf writer has put a tag where the mouth would be on the girl's face.

"Jane" Tag on Postal Label, Soho

A clever bit of efficiency in stealth tagging is the practice of using markers to write the tag on a blank U.S. Postal Service adhesive label, then sticking the label to target surface/location. Above is a detail-shot of an example we recently spotted on the Uptown "C" Train platform at Spring St. subway station in Soho, in New York City. The tag, which we're reading as "JANE," is ordinary but effective.

NoHo Sky Graf 4 - "Grate"

This graf by "Grate" adds some unqiue, stylistic symetry to the tag by curling the first and last letters.
Background Note
There's lots of skyline and rooftop graf in that semi-real, un-neighborhood-like downtown Manhattan neighborhood known as NoHo (for "NOrth of HOuston St.," as opposed to SoHo and "SOuth of HOuston St."). Here's a good example. The nabe's chic decrepitude and broken-up cobblestone streets are a vermeer of authenticity behind which are some of the largest, most expensive and well-appointed lofts and condos in all of New York City. Thoroughly gentrified and spacious, NoHo is a tiny enclave (of mostly converted 19th-century industrial buildings) that has managed to retain several generations of graf and street art new and old, in spite of the moneyed shops, bars, restaurants and residents that call the area their home.

NoHo Sky Graf 3 - "On Time"

We're not sure how to decipher this tag in Noho, NYC. Our best guess is that it's either "On Time" or "One Time." In any case, we've never seen a tag resembling it anywhere else in lower Manhattan. The angular styling of the letters makes this one stand out from the rest.

"DaysFares" Graf by Pigs Crew, NYC

This popular graf spot in an abandoned downtown NYC lot has been heating up with new ups recently like "DaysFares" above. There a "Pigs Crew" tag embedded in the initial "D," but we haven't seen their tags before. This is a massive up, and this location at East 1st St. and 2nd Avenue, in the East Village, has the kind of space required for large scale graf and street art. The lot is on the corner of a block that was one of the last undeveloped stretches of Lower Manhattan and full of aerosol art and paste-ups. Now, several massive luxury condo buildings have sprung up
