"Siren" Wheatpaste in Nolita

Went to Nolita on Sunday to get our hair trimmed and came across this recently posted wheatpaste dubbed "Siren." Love the high-contrast black-and-white illustrative style. Reminds us of that character "Emily." Or a character you might find in a indie graphic novel. This piece of street art (or guerrilla marketing) is on Elizabeth Street near Prince Street. On the west side of the block are three or four small buildings that have yet to see the effects of the larger gentrification of the neighborhood, which is is now one of downtown Manhattan's most desirable and trendy (and expensive) nabes. The buildings are mostly unused, decrepit and bombed with graf, street art and ad bills, and stand out like a sore thumb in an area filled with fashionable real estate, luxury apartments, and gut-rennovated condos and lofts.

Finished Street Painting by Rich Jacobs at Eleven, NYC 03

A couple of weeks ago, Global Graphica featured some shots of a work in progress by acclaimed artist Rich Jacobs, who happily posed for a photo with his artwork. Here we bring you the completed painting, which hangs on the side of Eleven, a vintage clothing store, at the corner of Prince and Elizabeth streets in Nolita, New York City. The art work features a group of faces painted in Rich Jacobs' unmistakeably original style. These faces have been a staple of Jacobs' art work for much of his career. You can see the photo of the painting (when it had only a background player on it) here.

Lightning Bolt on Ludlow Street, Lower East Side

We love the graphic idea for this throw-up on Ludlow Street in the Lower East Side, which is now going through a sizzling real estate boom and is years-deep into a sweeping gentrification process. (Buy your loft or condo now, if you can!) The lightning bolt is literally and figuratively an energetic symbol. We love the swift electrical power a bolt suggests. The graf treatment here is enhanced by the corrugated surface and texture of the metal shutter.

Boombox Dude by WK Interact 02

Here's a details of the boombox in a wheat-paste artwork by New York City artist WK Interact next to the 2nd Avenue Subway entrance at Allen and Houston streets in the Lower East Side. The neighborhood that is rapidly giving way to the development of luxury condos and apartments, as well as expensive restaurants and hotels.

Boombox Dude by WK Interact 01

Here's another awesome -- and new -- piece of wheat-paste artwork by New York City artist WK Interact. This work depicts a black-and-white life-sized dude with a classic old-school boombox (a.k.a., ghettoblaster). This artwork is next to the 2nd Avenue Subway entrance at Allen and Houston streets in the Lower East Side. WK Interact's studio and shop is on nearby Stanton Street in a diverse and creative neighborhood that is rapidly giving way to the development of luxury condos and apartments, as well as expensive restaurants and hotels.

Artist Rich Jacobs: Work in Progress at Eleven 03

Here's a shot of the artist Rich Jacobs, a super-nice guy who took a few minutes break from his work on a hot NYC day last weekend to speak with us about his art. Rich had just recently returned from Tokyo, Japan, where his work was being exhibited in a Harajuku art gallery. Rich's work has also been featured as part of the current Vans sneaker campaign. Here Rich is standing in front of a work in progress at the corner of Prince and Elizabeth streets in Nolita, in New York City. He was painting the first background layer of an original painting on a board affixed to the side of a vintage clothing shop called Eleven. Rich painted the exterior of the shop and it's logo. Check back at Global Graphica to see this finished work.

Aliens on Elizabeth St.

Found this amusing wheat-paste triptych of aliens by "Splat!" on Elizabeth Street just south of Houston Street in Nolita. The area has become an utlra-chic downtown nabe with high rents and expensive renovated lofts and condos. Fortunately, the hood still has a lot of singular downtown old-school flava' and is a New York cynosure of vibrant street art. Note the "BZEE" post nearby.

Exhibitionist Shop Graf, LES

This is some serious aerosol work on super-trendy Orchard Street on the Lower East Side, in New York City. The art is on the storefront shutter of a shop called Exhbitionist. The shop is on a block that is undergoing a truly radical -- even by Lower East Side standards -- transformation. Several low-rise buildings that thrived with retailers on both sides of the block have recently been torn down to make way for taller (read "more profitable") mix-use buildings, that is, new real estate developments that will include businesses and new apartments and condos together in a single structure, not unlike many NYC residential high-rises. As they say, everything in New York City eventually boils down to a conversation about real estate.

"Arab"

This tag is jarring, not so much for its style or boldness or scale, but because of the moniker itself. Given current events in the U.S. and globally, the tag resonates with New Yorkers and, perhaps makes us pause to think, in a way it wouldn't have several years ago, before the events of 9/11/2005. Which, whether the intention of the writer or not, is the importance and value of art (whether or not you consider Krylon tags art).

Adidas Store Frontage. Soho, NYC 01

German shoemaker Adidas has a fashion-forward concept store for its designer sneakers on cobblestoned Wooster Street in Soho, in New York City. The shop is a well-designed groundfloor and cavernous space surrounded by loft apartment buildings and shops like Stussy and Head Porter. Here we see the front of the space, which boasts large windows and a minimalist, garage-door facade. The iconic Adidas brand of three stripes and lift-blue can be found echoed on the collection of garbage and the upturned pallet resting curbside in front of the sneaker emporium.

Week 2: Time Magazine Graffiti Billboard 07

Previously we reported on the Time magazine billboard at Houston and Wooster streets in Soho, NYC, where large colorful tags have appeared by NYC graf writer Cope2 ("CopeII"). The idea is that each week, more aerosol art will go up on the billboard screen, which hangs from the north face of a loft apartment building, until eventually the Time magazine logo and trademark red-border will go up in the space and frame the Krylon work. In this second installment of photos from Week 2, you can seen the updated billboard with new, additional layers of graf. Week 3 images to be uploaded here soon.

"Sufer" + Skull Ups in Manhattan

Found this pair of ups on a recent hot, muggy New York summer day while we were on our way from Soho to Williamsburg. (Or as a buddy out it, "from a former arty lofts nabe to an emerging arty lofts nabe.") Here's the breakdown: there's a tag by the writer "Sufer," and nearby the skull tag that lives on many walls of the East Village and Lower East Side. In the adjoining lot sits a shiny, luxury car. Nice contrast.
