Street Artist Caught in the Act
We caught the street artist behind “Hanksy” in the act of putting up a large wheat-paste artwork late one night this past week on Orchard Street, in New York’s Lower East Side, just a couple of blocks away from Global Graphica HQ.
“Hanksy” is a cheeky homage to British street art star Banksy and his iconic artworks but with a twist: In Hanksy’s pieces the face of actor Tom Hanks is mashed up into the work. The artwork Hanksy is pictured pasting up in the photos here is a direct reference to Banksy’s “Sweeping It Under the Carpet,” originally put up in London.
We walked by the spot where this work was pasted the next day and it was gone. Too bad. We hope we see more Hanksy in the neighborhood.

Wheat-paste street-art post-up of a small boy wearing and an old-school beanie cap and scratching his butt. We found this on Crosby Street in SoHo, in New York City. Funny.

Bowery + Houston Streets
Yet more awesomeness at the massive commissioned art space on the wall at the northwest corner of Bowery and Houston streets in downtown New York City. In the past, epic works by international street-art superstars such as Shepard Fairey, Os Gemeos, JR and Keith Haring occupied this space originally curated by Deitch Projects art gallery in SoHo.
ASVP at Lasso
ASVP put up fresh wheat-paste artwork on a column at Lasso, a hip pizza-by-the-slice place that is also a small shrine of street art in Nolita, in New York City. This ASVP piece references a mini-pantheon of images the duo have created in recent years, each a stand-alone work of art wheat-pasted often throughout the city and elsewhere.
Banksy x Tom Hanks = Hanksy
What do you get when you mash up Tom Hanks and Banksy? Hanksy, naturally, and a droll, cheeky piece of wheat-paste street art on Mulberry Street in Nolita, in downtown New York City.
