Stop Sign Down!
The Rope-Controlled Folding NYC Road Sign
On the southwest corner at the intersection of Kenmare and Elizabeth streets in Nolita, in downtown New York City, there’s this curious rope-controlled folding-flap road sign that says “No Trucks W’msburg Br” (referring to the nearby Williamsburg Bridge linking the Lower East Side of Manhattan to northern Brooklyn). Below are images of the sign in its folded and open states.

Who is Jeff Wallace?
“Who is Jeff Wallace?” this sidewalk sign asks passersby on East Houston Street. Wallace is a bespectacled and bearded “resident beer guru” in the incredibly curated beer store within the Whole Foods supermarket at Bowery and Houston street in the Lower East Side of downtown New York City.

Tipping
Droll, punnish surfer-tourist-town bar humor in Tamarindo, Costa Rica: “TIPPING is NOT a city in China.” Sigh.

Coffee Mark
Stencil-like signage painting of a steaming cup of coffee outside a cafe in Jaco, Costa Rica.

POPS
The candy-color POPS sign in front of its heladeria at a road stop in rural Costa Rica. POPS is a chain of fast-food ice cream restaurants in Central America.

Cocktails at the San Franciscan
The partially lit sign (with missing letters) at the San Franciscan, a classic suburban lounge in Torrance, California, near Los Angeles. The decor and style of this place is practically intact from the 1970s. Got to love that there’s live music “URS TO SUN.”

Hillcrest Sign
The Hillcrest sign in the heart of the neighborhood of the same name in San Diego. The nabe is the city’s gay-hipster heartland and filled with great restaurants, shops and cafes.

Surf Indian
The sign at Surf Indian, the wonderful surfing gear and surf boards shop in Pacific Beach in San Diego.

Employees Only
“Employees Only” sign on staff room door at Intelligentsia Coffee cafe in Silver Lake, in Los Angeles.

Giant Robot 2
The neon Giant Robot “GR2″ sign out outside the store’s second Sawtelle Street location in Los Angeles.

Angel Youth
The beautifully worn “Angel Youth” sign near the intersection of Kingswell and Vermont streets in the Los Feliz / Hollywood Hills area of Los Angeles, a few blocks away from our temporary Global Graphica HQ in LA (dubbed our “LA Bureau”).
