One of the few, more impressive works at the Mr. Brainwash show in L.A. were these Victorian- (or Edwardian-) type portraits of a man and women with Batman and Batwoman masks.

Mr. Brainwash Artshow 2011 in LA

Filed under: Artist: Mr. Brainwash,Los Angeles — Tags: — vc @ 12:42 am

We’re in Los Angeles this week checking out the new, massive Mr. Brainwash exhibition dubbed “Artshow 2011.” Mr. Brainwash is French street artist Thierry Guetta, who many readers will know was the subject of the Oscar-nominated documentary film “Exit Through the Gift Shop” directed by Banksy.

Brainwash was on hand at the exhibition signing posters and postcards for visitors who were there in the hundreds in the gigantic multi-story industrial space that had been re-purposed as the studio and exhibition venue at 960 N. La Brea in Hollywood.

The first batch of pix from the show were live-blog-posted via iPhone, so the images are a bit dark and unclear.

Included in this batch are images of of some previously explored visual themes, such as the massive wheat-paste-ups of model Kate Moss; a giant Polaroid camera; a giant spray-paint can in homage to Andy Warhol’s famous Campbell’s soup cans; a graffiti-bombed stove; and Guetta himself, barely visible, signing posters for the punters.

We’ll be posting more in the coming day or two.

Mr. Brainwash’s Green Giant

Another massive piece of wheat-paste street art in Los Angeles from Mister Brainwash ( a.k.a., MBW, a.k.a., Thiery Guetta, who  many readers will know was the subject of Banksy’s Academy Award-winning documentary film Exit Through the Gift Shop). This pic of  Mr. Brainwash’s recent artwork come courtesy of our dude in L.A., Josh. (Thanks, J!)

Mr. Brainwash Massive in L.A.

Our man in Los Angeles, Josh, snapped pictures of this massive work by Mr. Brainwash (Thierry Guetta) on Santa Monica Boulevard.  The usual brainwash visuals and messaging are deployed here: Warholian homagery a la Campbell’s soup-can, 1970s-’80s “Memorex Man” TV commercial image and “Life is beautiful.” Mr. Brainwash, as many readers of this blog know, was the subject of Banky’s award-winning documentary film “Exit Through the Gift Shop.” Many thanks for the pix, Josh!

Fresh street art by the Brooklyn-based artist known as Bast Mr. Brainwash, one of our all-time fave creators here in New York City. This wheat-paste art work is on the Bowery near East 3rd Street in the East Village. The paste-up shows a blow-up photo of a young Elvis Presley playing guitar, except the image of a gun — an AK-47, perhaps? — has been swapped with the musical instrument. Fucking brilliant.
