September 3, 2004 West Village Graf
It was a hot, muggy summer day in New York City. We were on our way
cross-town to Pier 45 to lie on the grass and cool off by the Hudson
River and while cutting through the extreme West Village we spotted this
garage door covered with a collection graf--two large, well-executed tags
and bunch of crappy single-color writings. What struck us is about seeing
these tags is there's very little graffiti in the West Village. The
streets of the far West Village tend to be litter-free and well groomed.
It's rare to see aerosol "throw-ups" of the scale pictured here in the
neighborhood. Why this garage door got graffiti-bombed isn't obvious
other than it's a tempting canvas for one inspired writer whose first
tag opened the floodgates for others and their Krylon. Residents of the area enjoy
Manhattan's finest, oldest and most beautiful residential architecture in what is a
mostly land-marked and historic district.
